Cameroon and Turkey elevate defense ties with landmark agreement

In a move that significantly boosts Cameroon’s military capabilities, Defense Minister Joseph Beti Assomo has concluded a historic military and financial cooperation pact with Turkey during an official visit to Ankara.

The agreement, signed under the direct instructions of President Paul Biya, marks a new chapter in bilateral relations. Defense Minister Beti Assomo and his Turkish counterpart, Yaşar Güler, formalized the deal alongside Vice-Minister Musa Heybet. The signed documents outline enhanced financial and military collaboration frameworks, with both nations committing to deepen strategic cooperation in shared priority areas.

Beyond the ceremonial signing, Minister Beti Assomo toured the National Defense University of Turkey (MSÜ), a premier institution for military leadership training. Discussions centered on three critical pillars: expanding bilateral military cooperation, training Cameroonian defense personnel, and strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries.

This initiative builds on an existing foundation of cooperation. For years, Turkey has been providing military training to Cameroonian officers and non-commissioned officers at MSÜ facilities. During Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler’s visit to Yaoundé in May 2025, Beti Assomo had publicly acknowledged Ankara’s role in offering free advanced military education to Cameroonian cadets.

The June 3, 2026 agreement now elevates this cooperation to unprecedented levels, combining financial support with operational training enhancements. Cameroon is actively diversifying its strategic partnerships, and Turkey joins France, the United States, and Israel as a key military ally, offering a model based on education, funding, and joint operations.
