Canary Islands Parliament honors Moroccan consul’s diplomatic legacy
The President of the Canary Islands Parliament, Astrid Pérez, formally received Moroccan Consul General Fatiha El Kamouri this Wednesday to mark the conclusion of her four-year term leading the diplomatic mission in the archipelago, where she played a pivotal role in deepening institutional cooperation between Morocco and the Canary Islands.
During their meeting, Pérez expressed her sincere gratitude to Ms. El Kamouri for her tireless dedication throughout her mandate. She emphasized the value of sustained dialogue and institutional collaboration between the two governments, while wishing her continued success in her professional future.
Originally from Western Sahara, Fatiha El Kamouri arrived in the Canary Islands in 2022 after serving for six years as Morocco’s Consul in Bilbao, where she built a strong reputation for fostering institutional relations and supporting the Moroccan community in the region.
Local sources in the Canary Islands underscore the significant positive impact of Consul El Kamouri’s work in strengthening institutional relations between the regional government, led by President Fernando Clavijo, and Morocco. Her efforts have been instrumental in aligning the islands with Spain’s national diplomacy, not merely as diplomatic courtesy but as a strategic recognition of shared security priorities, regional stability, and substantial economic opportunities.
In a clear display of alignment with Morocco’s stance on the Western Sahara issue, Clavijo’s government has positioned itself in harmony with Spain’s foreign policy. This alignment reflects a deeper understanding of the geopolitical and economic benefits of cooperation across the Strait of Gibraltar.
Beyond high-level visits and the signing of multiple collaboration agreements across key sectors, the recent visit of a delegation from the Souss-Massa region to Las Palmas exemplifies the new momentum in relations. By hosting Karim Achengli and over 80 business representatives, Clavijo has transformed political rhetoric into tangible actions.
This institutional rapprochement underscores the Canary Islands’ emergence as a natural partner in Morocco’s development initiatives, rejecting divisive influences that once sought to undermine cooperation between the two regions.
The collaboration spans multiple strategic sectors. The Canary Islands’ expertise in water desalination, infrastructure management, and technological innovation has found a receptive audience in southern Morocco’s provinces. Meanwhile, businesses from both regions are actively exploring joint ventures, demonstrating that mutual interest forms the cornerstone of lasting peace and shared prosperity.
Consul Fatiha El Kamouri’s efforts over the past four years have been instrumental in catalyzing this transformation.
