In a bold move to address the escalating humanitarian and political turmoil gripping the Sahel region, Caritas networks across West Africa are joining forces through a unified communication strategy. The initiative, launched in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on February 19, brings together representatives from Caritas Burkina Faso, Caritas Mali, Caritas Niger, and Caritas Senegal under the long-standing Sahel Caritas platform, established in 2007.
strengthening regional response to Mali’s crisis
The five-day gathering, which concludes on February 23, focuses on aligning emergency response protocols and information-sharing mechanisms among these Catholic aid organizations. Participants include communication officers and emergency operations teams, all working toward a single goal: enhancing collective preparedness and intervention capabilities in crisis zones.
The meeting is part of the Emergency Appeal 28/2012, a critical project aimed at bolstering the Sahel’s Caritas branches’ capacity to respond to the humanitarian fallout from Mali’s ongoing instability. Father Isidore Ouédraogo, Executive Secretary of Caritas Burkina Faso, emphasized the urgency of establishing a standardized operational framework to streamline emergency responses across national borders.
coordinated action for displaced populations
With Mali’s ongoing conflict displacing hundreds of thousands of civilians, neighboring countries have become temporary shelters for an estimated 300,000 refugees. The Caritas networks are prioritizing a coordinated approach to ensure these displaced individuals receive timely assistance, from food and shelter to medical care and psychosocial support. By fostering real-time information exchange and resource pooling, the initiative seeks to mitigate the humanitarian toll of the crisis while reinforcing regional solidarity.
