Le Tchad accueille le Forum Africain de l’Eau en 2026
Le Forum Africain de l’Eau se tiendra à N’Djamena les 15 et 16 juillet 2026, réunissant des acteurs clés pour discuter des enjeux hydriques du continent.
The upcoming African Water Forum, themed « From Vision to Action », is set to convene in N’Djamena, Chad, on July 15 and 16, 2026. This pivotal event will gather key stakeholders to address the critical water challenges facing the African continent.
A press briefing was recently held by Chad’s Minister of Finance, Budget, Economy, Planning, and International Cooperation to formally announce the forum. The event will also see the participation of the World Bank’s resident representative in Chad, underscoring the international significance of this gathering.
During his address, the Minister highlighted Chad’s abundant water resources, which include the vast Lake Chad, significant rivers like the Chari and Logone, and numerous other lakes such as Fitri, Léré, Iro, Bahr Aouk, Batha, and Bitéha. He further noted the country’s shared Nubian Sandstone aquifer and various transboundary basins that are vital to the sub-region’s irrigation and water supply.
“As a nation situated in the Sahel, we are acutely aware of the multifaceted challenges associated with water scarcity: the relentless pressures of climate change, rapid demographic expansion, and the inherent fragility of our existing infrastructure,” the Minister stated. He emphasized that it is precisely these urgent issues that compelled Chad to position itself at the forefront of this crucial continental dialogue.
Hosting this forum signals a strong vote of confidence from international partners and reflects our government’s unwavering commitment to elevate water security to the highest tier of national priorities. Water transcends its role as a mere natural resource; it is, in essence, a fundamental prerequisite for sustainable development, enduring peace, and the resilience of our communities.
The Chadian government is resolutely dedicated to enhancing access to safe drinking water and sanitation services for all its citizens, particularly the most vulnerable populations. Furthermore, efforts are focused on expanding irrigation systems to bolster national food production and ensuring the sustainable management of shared water resources with neighboring countries within the Lake Chad basin and the Nubian Sandstone region.
Regarding the partnership with the World Bank, the Minister acknowledged the Bank’s renewed dedication to supporting Chad. A new project currently under development represents a significant stride, aligning perfectly with our long-term vision for the water sector.
At the core of Chad’s national development plan, which draws inspiration from the President of the Republic’s political agenda, lies the “Water Forward” initiative. This initiative is founded on the principles of ensuring water for people, for food security, and for the health of our planet.
Anticipations for the forum are high, with hopes that it will yield tangible outcomes. These include concrete commitments, the establishment of national water compacts for participating countries, and the implementation of robust monitoring mechanisms. Such mechanisms will be crucial in holding all stakeholders accountable for their agreed-upon pledges. Chad stands ready to fulfill its dual role as a gracious host nation and a proactive participant in Africa’s transformative journey towards comprehensive water management.
