Senegal’s pastef party confirms ousmane sonko as sole presidential candidate

The Patriotes africains du Sénégal pour le Travail, l’Éthique et la Fraternité (Pastef), Senegal’s ruling party, will hold its first-ever elective national congress on June 6–7, 2026, in Dakar. The landmark event will focus on electing the party’s new president and setting its political roadmap for the coming years, as Senegal gears up for critical elections in 2027 (local) and 2029 (presidential).

In a move that came as little surprise, the High Authority for Party Regulation (HARP) announced that incumbent Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko is the sole candidate vying for his own re-election as party leader. However, the party’s regulatory body also rejected the applications of seven other individuals, citing either incomplete documentation—such as missing identification or membership cards—or procedural irregularities deemed irreparable after the May 20 filing deadline. These exclusions underscore the strict compliance standards enforced by HARP in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.

The upcoming congress, presided over by Sonko himself, marks a pivotal moment for Pastef as it prepares to define its vision for Senegal’s future. With national elections on the horizon, the gathering will serve as a platform to unite party members, reaffirm strategic priorities, and project a unified front ahead of the political challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
