Côte d’Ivoire firmly stands with Morocco’s autonomy initiative for Western Sahara

During a recent regional seminar of the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization (C24) held in Managua, the Côte d’Ivoire delegation reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy plan aimed at resolving the long-standing Western Sahara dispute. This position underscores Abidjan’s alignment with the growing international consensus on the initiative’s viability.

The Ivorian representatives emphasized the credibility of the Moroccan proposal, which has garnered backing from nearly 130 countries. They highlighted its alignment with international law principles and UN resolutions, particularly the 2025 Security Council Resolution 2797, which formally recognized the plan’s relevance.

Key arguments supporting Morocco’s autonomy model

The delegation outlined several pillars that strengthen the Moroccan initiative’s legitimacy:

  • Local governance: The plan empowers the populations of southern provinces to manage their own affairs through democratic elections and local representation in international forums.
  • Human rights advancements: Commitment to strengthening regional human rights commissions and cooperation with UN mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability.
  • Economic participation: Emphasis on sustainable development opportunities for local communities within the framework of Morocco’s territorial integrity.

The Ivorian delegation also raised concerns about the Tindouf camps, calling for an urgent census of populations to address humanitarian and legal challenges. Additionally, Abidjan reiterated its commitment to a political solution under the exclusive aegis of the UN, urging all parties to embrace realism and compromise for a lasting resolution.

This stance reflects Côte d’Ivoire’s broader diplomatic strategy, which prioritizes stability and cooperation in Africa’s Sahel and Maghreb regions. By endorsing Morocco’s autonomy plan, Abidjan positions itself as a key player in regional efforts to foster peace and development.
