Bongouanou, 06 juil 2026 – The Ivorian government has unequivocally reiterated its “zero tolerance” stance against female genital mutilation (FGM). This strong reaffirmation follows a deeply disturbing incident where five young girls in Bongouanou were subjected to this violent practice.
The harrowing events unfolded during the night of Tuesday, June 30, 2026, within the Dioulakro neighborhood of Kangandi village, part of the Bongouanou commune. The victims, ranging in age from three to nine years old, endured what has been described as an act of “extreme violence.” This traumatic experience resulted in significant hemorrhages, urinary retention, and severe psychological distress for the minors involved.
Prompt action was taken after an anonymous tip led to the immediate intervention of teams from the regional directorate for Women, Family, and Children, alongside the judicial child and youth protection service (SPJEJ), and the Bongouanou police station. Their swift response was crucial in rescuing the children.
The five young girls received urgent medical attention at the Bongouanou Departmental Public Hospital (EPHD). They are now safe and secure in a specialized center operating under the Ministry of Women, Family and Children, where they are receiving comprehensive medical, psychological, and social support.
Regarding the legal proceedings, law enforcement officers apprehended two suspects immediately following their intervention. Authorities have initiated a thorough investigation to identify and bring to justice all individuals involved, both perpetrators and accomplices, responsible for this heinous act.
The Ministry underscored that female genital mutilation remains a grave criminal offense, subject to severe penalties under Ivorian law. This resolute condemnation aligns with the national commitments to eradicate gender-based violence (GBV), which Her Excellency First Lady Dominique Ouattara notably reiterated on June 13, 2026.
In light of the persistent threat posed by this harmful practice, authorities are urging the public to maintain heightened vigilance and to systematically report any act or attempted act of genital mutilation.
