The battle for dominance in northern Mali has escalated into one of its deadliest confrontations yet. In a televised address on the national broadcaster, Mali’s army chief, General Jean Élysée Dao, revealed a grim toll following fierce fighting in the strategic town of Anéfis, located roughly 100 kilometers south of Kidal.
Heavy casualties on both sides of the conflict
The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) sustained significant losses in the offensive. General Dao confirmed the deaths of nearly thirty soldiers, described as “martyrs,” alongside over sixty wounded, some with critical injuries. On the opposing side, the military claims to have inflicted substantial damage on the coalition of separatist factions—primarily the Azawad Liberation Front—and militant groups linked to Al-Qaïda, including the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM). Rebel spokespeople, however, admitted to losing “some of their finest fighters” without providing specific numbers.
Anéfis: the key to securing northern Mali
Anéfis holds immense strategic value. For the Malian military, supported by Russian allies, securing this town is critical to severing supply routes used by armed groups and safeguarding the critical corridor linking to the stronghold of Kidal.
Military sources describe the clashes as exceptionally brutal. A detachment of Malian troops and Russian reinforcements found themselves temporarily besieged within a military base, repelling repeated assaults before a heavily armed convoy, dispatched from Gao under aerial cover, shifted the momentum back in the army’s favor. Rebel groups, meanwhile, framed their withdrawal as a “strategic retreat” to avoid civilian casualties.
The transitional government’s security challenge
The devastating outcome of these battles underscores the persistent security crisis gripping Mali since 2012. For the military-led government in Bamako, the heavy losses serve as a stern test of its pledge to restore peace and territorial sovereignty across the nation. While the army vows to reclaim every inch of contested land, the ferocity of the fight for Anéfis reveals the enduring resilience of armed factions in the North, prolonging a grueling war of attrition that exacts a severe human cost.
