In Niamey, Dr Jean Baptiste Nikiema has officially assumed his position as the new Resident Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Niger. The diplomat presented his credentials to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Nigeriens Abroad, His Excellence Bakary Yaou Sangaré. This formal ceremony, attended by WHO staff and ministry officials, highlights the strong and continuous partnership between the organization and Niger.
Following the presentation, an audience was held to discuss strategic health objectives for the country and the wider African region. The Minister emphasized the WHO‘s essential role as a technical advisor and secretariat for member states, stressing the need for a collaboration that effectively reinforces the national health system to benefit the people of Niger.
Strategic health priorities and cooperation
The dialogue between Dr Nikiema and the Minister covered several critical areas of cooperation, including:
- Enhancing access to primary healthcare.
- Strengthening the resilience of the national health system.
- Improving maternal and child health services.
- Promoting health through the management of social determinants.
- Disease prevention and emergency preparedness.
Dr Nikiema lauded the leadership of Niger‘s authorities, noting significant advancements in childhood immunization, the reduction of maternal and perinatal mortality, and the successful fight against onchocerciasis. He also expressed appreciation for the government’s support during the WHO‘s financial challenges and praised local efforts to embrace digitalization and telemedicine.
A distinguished career in public health
Dr Jean Baptiste Nikiema, a senior public health expert from Burkina Faso, brings over 30 years of experience in health diplomacy and research. His expertise spans molecular biology, pharmacology, and the development of new therapeutic approaches using medicinal plants. He has held numerous high-level positions, including Director General of Pharmacy and Medicines in Burkina Faso and WHO Regional Advisor for Africa.
Before his arrival in Niger, he served as the WHO Deputy Representative in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he coordinated responses to major epidemics and humanitarian crises. His contributions to the African Medicines Agency and the promotion of local pharmaceutical production have been instrumental in strengthening regulatory systems across the continent.
In addition to his administrative roles, Dr Nikiema is a prolific researcher with more than 50 scientific publications and has mentored dozens of doctoral and master’s students in medicine and public health. Fluent in both English and French, he is committed to supporting Niger‘s health sovereignty while optimizing operational efficiency and resource mobilization.
