DRC Ebola Crisis: Over 500 Dead as Virus Spreads Across Multiple Provinces

Situation in the DRC

The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has claimed over 500 lives, according to the latest data from the Congolese Ministry of Health.

A total of 1,561 cases have been confirmed, with 506 deaths reported so far. Additionally, 253 people have been declared cured, while 628 patients remain in isolation or hospitalization.

Expanded Outbreak Zones

The Ebola outbreak, which was declared on May 15, has now spread to 36 health zones across the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu. Community transmission of the virus continues to occur in these areas.

Ituri Province remains the hardest-hit region, accounting for over 91% of confirmed cases and nearly 84% of reported deaths since the outbreak began, according to Congolese authorities.

WHO Concerns

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the rapidly evolving Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus continues to spread quickly and sustainably. As of July 1, at least 10,821 people in contact with confirmed cases were under surveillance in Ituri and North Kivu as part of efforts to contain the outbreak.
