Former president macky sall to meet with Senegal’s current leader

Former Senegalese President Macky Sall, who has resided in Morocco since concluding his term two and a half years ago, is slated to be received by his successor, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, on July 17. This anticipated meeting with Senegal’s head of state, as announced by Sall himself on social media platforms, is directly linked to his campaign for the prestigious position of United Nations Secretary-General.

Sall’s forthcoming arrival in Dakar and his reception by President Faye have ignited considerable debate and discussion, particularly among the more hardline factions within Ousmane Sonko’s Pastef party. For some, hosting Macky Sall is seen as an implicit endorsement of the pre-election violence and alleged mismanagement of the nation’s economic and financial resources that occurred during his tenure.

It is noteworthy that Macky Sall’s bid for the leadership of the United Nations Secretariat has not officially received backing from Senegal, but rather from Burundi. Following his departure from the presidency in Senegal in 2024 and his subsequent relocation to Marrakech, Macky Sall has maintained a highly active international profile, engaging with numerous global leaders in preparation for his aspiration to become the UN’s top administrator.
