France cuts ties with Burkina Faso and expels all diplomatic staff

Tensions between France and Burkina Faso have reached a critical point, with Paris announcing the complete withdrawal of its diplomatic personnel from Ouagadougou. The decision follows Burkina Faso’s unilateral decision to sever diplomatic relations with France, marking a significant escalation in a long-simmering dispute.

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the move, stating that Burkina Faso’s chargé d’affaires in Paris was summoned for consultations on June 30. This action comes just days after Ouagadougou declared its intention to break ties, citing what it described as France’s alleged support for terrorist groups—a claim Paris has strongly denied.

France rejects accusations and prepares firm response

The French government has categorically refuted Burkina Faso’s allegations, calling them entirely unfounded. In a statement, Paris reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to combating terrorism in the Sahel region, emphasizing that it has always prioritized the safety and security of civilians in its operations.

As a retaliatory measure, France has demanded that all Burkinabe diplomatic staff leave the country within seven days, invoking the principle of reciprocity. This move underscores the seriousness of the situation and the depth of the rift between the two nations.

Growing distrust and shifting alliances

Relations between Burkina Faso and France have deteriorated steadily since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed power following the 2022 coup. The military-led government in Ouagadougou has adopted an increasingly assertive stance, frequently criticizing Western influence—particularly that of France—and accusing Paris of undermining its sovereignty.

In response, Burkina Faso has taken several decisive steps to distance itself from France, including the expulsion of the French ambassador in 2023, the cancellation of military cooperation agreements, and the termination of French military operations against jihadist groups in the country. Since then, Ouagadougou has pursued closer ties with alternative partners, including Russia, Turkey, and Iran.

Safety concerns for French nationals

In light of the escalating tensions, France has advised its citizens in Burkina Faso to exercise extreme caution. Over 2,000 French nationals currently reside in Burkina Faso, while more than 6,000 Burkinabe citizens live in France. The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected in the coming days.
