Why France is tightening student visa rules for Cameroun

French authorities in Cameroun have justified the stricter financial requirements for student visa applicants by citing a surge in fraudulent applications. During a July 16 press briefing in Yaoundé, embassy officials highlighted irregularities such as forged bank statements, falsified identity documents, and inaccurate financial proofs submitted through Campus France.

Muriel Piquet-Viaux, Advisor for Cooperation and Cultural Action, confirmed that these measures aim to curb deceptive practices that have become increasingly common in student visa applications. The embassy has implemented enhanced verification systems to scrutinize all submitted documents before approval.

New financial obligations for Cameroun students

Under the updated rules, students admitted to private institutions in France must now provide proof of full tuition payment or demonstrate access to the total required funds before visa issuance. Those who have already paid a deposit will have their funds released only after visa approval, with conditions varying by institution.

Exclusive measure raises concerns

Cameroun remains the only African country subject to these heightened student visa requirements. The policy has sparked widespread concern among families, many of whom view it as an unnecessary barrier to educational opportunities abroad.
