Diplomatic breakthrough: France and Morocco unite for shared future
In a landmark address at the Paris Peace Forum held at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Rabat, France’s newly accredited ambassador Philippe Lalliot presented a vision for strengthened collaboration between France and Morocco. His remarks followed the formal presentation of his credentials to His Majesty the King, marking the beginning of a critical chapter in bilateral relations.
Reaffirming international law as cornerstone of stability
In front of a distinguished diplomatic audience, Ambassador Lalliot delivered a powerful message on the enduring importance of international law. “International law is not obsolete. Its foundational principles remain valid and must be defended as a universal shield,” he asserted. He framed these legal frameworks as essential for safeguarding nations without inherent power, emphasizing their role in maintaining global peace, stability, and collective security.
The ambassador positioned the France-Morocco partnership as a model for addressing modern challenges through collective action. “We stand at a pivotal moment to transform shared ambitions into concrete solutions,” he stated, highlighting the need for pragmatic approaches to global transitions and crises.
A €350 million water partnership
Less than 48 hours after presenting his credentials, Ambassador Lalliot joined Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water to launch an ambitious €350 million water management program. This initiative, developed with German and Italian partners, directly supports Morocco’s national strategy for securing its water sovereignty.
The program targets critical areas including:
- Enhanced mapping of groundwater resources
- Joint climate adaptation strategies for water-related disasters like flooding
- Implementation of wastewater recycling projects
This collaborative effort arrives at a crucial time as discussions on energy and food security intensify ahead of the G7 summit in Evian.
Building a shared responsibility framework
Ambassador Lalliot articulated a vision where France and Morocco lead by example in international cooperation. “Our shared history and common vision for the future create a responsibility to demonstrate leadership,” he explained. This approach prioritizes inclusive partnerships, particularly ahead of major bilateral and multilateral milestones.
The ambassador’s address at the Rabat forum signals a new phase of Franco-Moroccan cooperation, where strategic investments in water security and adherence to international legal principles form the bedrock of a resilient partnership.
