Nigeria’s top political leadership rolled out the red carpet on June 1 for Benin’s newly elected President, Romuald Wadagni, marking his first official foreign visit since taking office. The high-profile reception at Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport was personally overseen by Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State.
Diplomatic momentum builds between Cotonou and Abuja
The Nigerian presidency confirmed that the warm welcome underscored Nigeria’s commitment to fostering stronger ties with its neighbor. Following the airport ceremony, President Wadagni proceeded to the Presidential Villa for an in-depth meeting with Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of Nigeria. Discussions centered on deepening collaboration across critical areas, including security, trade, and regional integration, reflecting a shared vision for mutual growth.
Strengthening an economic lifeline
The visit highlighted the deep-rooted interdependence between Benin and Nigeria, particularly in trade and agriculture. Nigeria, West Africa’s largest economy, serves as Benin’s leading commercial partner, supplying essential goods and services that support Benin’s economy, which relies heavily on agriculture and service sectors.
A new chapter in West African diplomacy
Beninese authorities emphasized that this trip symbolizes a strategic pivot toward a more proactive foreign policy under President Wadagni. The administration is prioritizing a diplomacy of proximity, designed to enhance collective sovereignty and foster closer regional alliances. The meeting between the two presidents signals a bold step toward revitalizing the Cotonou-Abuja axis and unlocking fresh opportunities for cooperation.
