The capital of Sénégal, Dakar, is set to welcome high-level delegates from across the continent for the 85ᵉ Session of the African Parliamentary Union Executive Committee, taking place on June 3-4, 2026. As the countdown begins, Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly of Sénégal, has set the tone for discussions ahead of the gathering.

The incoming session, which will bring together over 100 parliamentarians from nearly 16 African nations, marks a significant milestone as it will be the first major parliamentary event presided over by Sonko in his new role. His election to the presidency of the National Assembly on May 26, 2026, with an overwhelming 99.25% of votes, underscores the confidence placed in his leadership.

In a statement addressed to fellow parliamentarians, Sonko emphasized the critical importance of parliamentary cooperation in addressing Africa’s most pressing challenges. His message underscored a vision rooted in self-reliance, where the continent’s future is shaped by Africans themselves, guided by shared values and collective aspirations.

Sonko remarked, “At a time when our continent faces unprecedented challenges, the reinforcement of parliamentary cooperation has never been more essential. I am convinced that Africa’s future will be built by Africans, in accordance with our values, ambitions, and interests. I hope our discussions will advance the panafrican ideal that has guided generations before us and to which we remain deeply committed.”
