The President of Gabon, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, has officially confirmed plans for a state visit to France on July 20, 2026, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.
During a recent announcement, the Gabonese Head of State outlined that this high-level meeting will build upon the direct dialogue established between Libreville and Paris since the conclusion of the transitional period. Key topics set for discussion include economic cooperation, environmental sustainability, Congo Basin forest conservation, workforce training, and regional security challenges.
Since assuming office in August 2023, President Oligui Nguema has undertaken one previous official trip to France. The visit, which took place from May 27 to May 31, 2024, culminated in a meeting at the Élysée Palace with French President Emmanuel Macron. During this encounter, both leaders revitalized cooperation across economic, political, trade, and environmental domains, with particular emphasis on biodiversity protection and climate action initiatives.
The May 2024 visit also featured a Franco-Gabonese business forum in Paris, drawing nearly 600 business leaders, alongside constructive engagements with the Gabonese diaspora. The upcoming July 2026 visit will represent the second official state visit by the Gabonese President to France.
French counterpart’s visit to Libreville in late 2025
In reciprocation, President Macron made two official trips to Gabon since 2017, most recently attending the One Forest Summit in November 2025. During this visit from November 23 to 24, 2025, the French leader was personally received at Léon-Mba International Airport by his Gabonese counterpart. The stated objectives centered on celebrating the completion of the democratic transition and reinforcing support for the newly elected administration through a reinvigorated partnership based on principles of equal engagement.
This November 2025 meeting facilitated the resumption of several collaborative projects, including training programs for Gabonese security forces, the establishment of an academy dedicated to natural resource conservation, and French-backed initiatives to modernize the Transgabonais railway system.
With the confirmed July 2026 visit, President Oligui Nguema underscores Gabon’s commitment to fostering a balanced and dynamic relationship with France. Following the reciprocal visits in May 2024 and November 2025, the diplomatic calendar between the two countries continues to gain momentum.
