A French national, accused of operating as an intelligence agent under diplomatic cover, has been handed a 20-year prison sentence in Mali for undermining state security. The verdict, delivered by the specialized anti-terrorism criminal chamber in Bamako, follows his detention in August 2025.
legal consequences and diplomatic fallout
The court not only imposed a lengthy prison term but also barred the convicted individual—identified as Yann V.—from re-entering Mali for two decades. Additionally, a fine of 5,400 euros was levied against him. Prosecutors had accused him of involvement in a suspected espionage network operating within the country.
His arrest on August 13, 2025, came during a joint operation involving Mali’s State Security agency. At the time, he was detained alongside several Malian military officers from the Forces armées maliennes (FAMa). These officers, since dismissed from service, stand accused of collaborating in a plot to destabilize Mali’s transitional government and orchestrate a coup attempt. Their trial remains pending.
french government denies allegations
In response to the ruling, French authorities strongly rejected the accusations against their citizen. The Foreign Ministry in Paris dismissed the claims as unfounded, asserting that the individual was engaged in legitimate security cooperation efforts. The government emphasized that it has never supported or participated in any activities aimed at undermining Mali’s stability.
This case has deepened the rift between Bamako and Paris. Following the arrest, France suspended its counterterrorism assistance programs in Mali and ordered the expulsion of two Malian diplomats from French territory.
strained relations amid political shifts
Relations between Mali and France have steadily deteriorated since military leaders took power after the 2020 and 2021 coups. Under the new regime, Bamako has progressively distanced itself from Western allies, particularly France, while forging closer political and military ties with Russia.
