French football fans storm field during Nantes-Toulouse Ligue 1 match
Disheartened by their team’s inevitable relegation, Nantes supporters invaded the pitch, halting the final Ligue 1 fixture against Toulouse.
The final match of the 34th and concluding round of Ligue 1 between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC was abruptly halted after just twenty minutes of play on Sunday, May 17. With Nantes already relegated to Ligue 2 and Toulouse sitting in 10th place without any remaining championship aspirations, the game stood at a scoreless draw when chaos erupted.
Dozens of individuals dressed in black, many wearing hooded masks bearing the club’s colors, forcibly broke through security barriers from the Loire Tribune and stormed onto the Beaujoire pitch, igniting smoke flares in the process. This sudden invasion forced both teams to hastily retreat to their locker rooms.
Halilhodzic vents frustration
Nantes coach Vahid Halilhodzic attempted to confront the invading supporters on the pitch but was restrained by a staff member. The coach’s palpable anger soon surfaced in the locker room, captured on camera by Ligue 1+.
While most of the pitch invaders returned to the stands, the match remained suspended. According to commentators from Ligue 1+, a crisis cell was convened, uniting representatives from the French Football League (LFP) and public authorities to determine the game’s fate.
