Strategic partnership takes center stage

Warmly received by Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, Lecornu’s visit marks a significant step in Franco-Moroccan relations, which have steadily improved since France’s 2024 recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. The two leaders will hold bilateral talks before co-chairing the 15th Franco-Moroccan High-Level Meeting—a crucial dialogue platform last convened in 2019.

Fifteen agreements on the agenda

The visit will see the signing of approximately fifteen accords, with key areas including civil aviation, infrastructure development, water resource management, electricity interconnection, defense cooperation and cultural exchanges. A landmark partnership between the Arab World Institute in Paris and Morocco’s Ministry of Culture is also slated for formalization. Additionally, preparations for an upcoming state visit by King Mohammed VI to France—already confirmed—are expected to advance during these discussions.

Morocco emerges as France’s key Maghreb partner

The strengthening of Franco-Moroccan ties underscores Paris’s strategic pivot toward Rabat as its principal partner in the Maghreb region. With security concerns in the Sahel remaining a priority, France is increasingly relying on Morocco’s cooperation, particularly amid ongoing complexities in its relationship with Algeria despite recent diplomatic thaw.
