Chaos erupted during Sunday’s Ligue 1 finale between Nantes and Toulouse as home supporters stormed the pitch just 20 minutes into the game, leading to the match’s permanent suspension.
Marina Ferrari, the Minister of Sports, Youth, and Associative Life, vehemently condemned these “unacceptable scenes of violence” on Sunday, May 17. Her remarks followed the dramatic halt of the Nantes-Toulouse fixture, the 34th and final matchday of France’s top football league. Fans of Nantes had breached security, flooding the playing field and igniting flares, forcing the complete abandonment of the contest.
Minister Ferrari asserted that such acts of aggression “have absolutely no place in sports or within our Republic.” She further declared, “I condemn these actions with the utmost severity and extend my full support to the players and the peaceful supporters who came to enjoy the event.”
The minister emphasized that “everyone must take responsibility to identify the perpetrators of this violence, who must be punished with the greatest severity.” The game, which stood at a 0-0 draw in the 22nd minute, saw supporters from the Tribune Loire section pour onto the pitch at the Stade de la Beaujoire. Nantes, already confirmed for relegation to Ligue 2 after finishing 17th, and 10th-place Toulouse, with no further stakes in the season, witnessed the disruption. After several minutes, the Nantes fans retreated to their stands, which were then secured by numerous riot police, though not before some scuffles broke out.
Notably, Minister Ferrari offered no public statements regarding other disturbances that occurred later that evening, including a similar pitch invasion by Nice supporters following their match against Auxerre.
