Gabon is currently engaged in intensive negotiations and technical preparations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to forge a new framework for economic cooperation. This steadfast commitment underscores the nation’s continuous dialogue with its enduring financial partner. Officials within the government confirm that discussions between Gabonese authorities and the IMF are proceeding regularly, fostered by a climate of constructive engagement and shared responsibility.
Following the spring meetings held in April, Gabonese representatives and IMF teams have maintained consistent virtual exchanges through videoconferences. These sessions adhere to a jointly agreed schedule, primarily dedicated to advancing technical work. A significant in-person meeting occurred on July 2, 2026, at the IMF’s Washington headquarters. Thierry Minko, Gabon’s Minister of Economy, Finance, Debt, and Participations, who also leads initiatives against the high cost of living, held a cordial discussion with the IMF’s Africa Director. The Director was accompanied by key colleagues, including Aliona Cebotari, the mission chief specifically assigned to Gabon.
The administration states that this crucial dialogue is progressing according to a jointly established roadmap. This coherent and structured plan is centered around several key areas: the amended finance law for 2026, the macroeconomic and budgetary framework projected for the 2027-2029 period, the systematic consolidation of economic, financial, and budgetary data, and the meticulous preparation for subsequent stages of engagement with the Fund.
