journalist Souley Onohiolo to shave iconic beard after 8-month wait
The highly anticipated “Operation Fall the Beard” will finally take place this Friday, July 3, ending a symbolic eight-month vigil by journalist Souley Onohiolo. The event, meticulously organized by a dedicated committee, marks the fulfillment of a personal pledge tied to a government reshuffle that never materialized.
Symbolic eight-month wait ends as journalist fulfills personal pledge
After eight months of sporting an imposing beard, journalist Souley Onohiolo will finally undergo the symbolic shaving ceremony this Friday, July 3, at noon. The event, dubbed “Operation Fall the Beard,” was meticulously planned by an organizing committee who waited patiently for a government reshuffle that never came.
A personal pledge tied to national politics
The journalist made a bold public commitment: he would only shave his beard once President Paul Biya—re-elected in October 2026—reshuffled the government, which has remained unchanged since 2019. “The President of the ‘Operation Fall the Beard’ organizing committee announces that on Friday, July 3, 2026, at 12:00 PM, the official shaving ceremony of Souley Onohiolo will take place at the Botanik’s Beauty Center in the Essos neighborhood of Yaoundé”, the committee stated in an official communiqué.
The ceremony will be held under the high patronage and general supervision of Dieudonné Mveng Balla, founder of the television channel Info TV. Organizers describe it as a “unique and unprecedented event bringing together Cameroon’s media elite and international press, celebrating a man whose silent personal revolt has resonated for eight months—through a thick beard and unkempt hair—as a civic stand.”
A civic stand that captured national attention
Souley Onohiolo’s symbolic gesture became a national talking point. His thick beard and refusal to trim his hair for months represented a personal challenge that evolved into a broader statement about governance and accountability. “A symbol of resistance, a mark of civic engagement, and a firm desire to impact society—to shift the lines”, the organizing committee explained.
The journalist’s silent protest drew widespread attention, with many following his journey closely. The July 3 ceremony will formally conclude this remarkable saga in the presence of the press and those who witnessed his extraordinary stand—whether from afar or up close.
