Two Ligue 1 fixtures were abandoned following pitch invasions during the final matchday. The incidents marred what should have been a celebratory conclusion to the season.
The final round of Ligue 1 matches descended into disorder as pitch invasions disrupted two fixtures in Nice and Nantes. These disturbances overshadowed the culmination of an already tense campaign.
At Nice’s stadium, ultras breached security barriers late in the game against Metz, forcing police intervention. The situation escalated far beyond mere fan frustration in Nantes, where chaos erupted mid-match.
At the Stade de la Beaujoire, relegation-bound FC Nantes saw their game against Toulouse cut short in dramatic fashion. Just 22 minutes into the contest, dozens of hooded supporters stormed the pitch, prompting an immediate halt to proceedings as players retreated to the dressing rooms.
“This is disgraceful”
After a 40-minute delay, tournament officials made the difficult decision to abandon the match entirely. The incident cast a pall over what marked coach Vahid Halilhodžić’s final game in professional football. The veteran tactician expressed his profound disappointment following the abrupt conclusion.
“This is disgraceful. I wanted to go to the supporters and tell them to stop. Frustration is understandable, but not this. I’ve given everything as a coach and as a man. Unfortunately, the reality is harsh,” he reflected.
While governing bodies have yet to issue formal statements, investigations have already commenced. FC Nantes faces severe repercussions, with potential penalties including temporary stand closures and point deductions for next season’s Ligue 2 campaign. Such measures would echo those imposed on Saint-Étienne four years prior, which saw the club start the season with a six-point handicap due to similar misconduct.
