Lucas Chevalier‘s stint at Paris Saint-Germain has taken a dramatic turn, raising serious questions about his future with the club. Just a year after his arrival, the once-touted heir to Gianluigi Donnarumma finds himself sidelined, with his prospects dimming rapidly.
Signed from LOSC Lille for a reported €40 million, Chevalier was brought in to challenge Mike Maignan for France’s goalkeeper spot and solidify his place as PSG’s long-term number one. Yet, his first season in the French capital has been far from what was expected. Not only did he lose his starting position, but he was also overlooked for the World Cup squad, with Didier Deschamps opting for Brice Samba and Robin Risser instead.
Competition and uncertainty loom over Chevalier
The arrival of Zion Suzuki from Parme on the club’s radar only adds to the pressure, threatening to push Chevalier further down the pecking order. With Matvey Safonov emerging as the new first-choice goalkeeper, the Frenchman’s future at PSG has never looked more fragile.
Experts urge a loan departure
Walid Acherchour, a prominent football pundit, has gone as far as advising Chevalier to seek a loan move to regain his confidence and playing time. “If I were in Chevalier’s shoes, I’d push for a loan,” he stated in a recent broadcast. “I’d have a frank talk with Luis Enrique. If he can’t guarantee me the starting spot, I wouldn’t fight for it—I’d ask to be loaned out to play regularly, and maybe return as PSG’s number one later.”
Acherchour’s remarks echo concerns about Chevalier’s ability to reclaim his place, especially after Safonov’s stellar second-half performance, which cemented his status as the club’s new first-choice goalkeeper. “Safonov has shown incredible mental strength and integration within the team,” Acherchour added. “You can feel the weight of the PSG jersey on him—it’s like it weighs 150kg on his shoulders. With Chevalier, it feels much lighter. I still believe Chevalier is the better goalkeeper, but he hasn’t shown it.”
A loan move last summer?
Acherchour also reflected on Chevalier’s potential move to LOSC Lille last season, suggesting it could have been a better path. “If I were Chevalier or his agent, I’d question whether staying at PSG was the right call,” he said. “He needs to play regularly. Last summer, the ideal scenario would have been a loan to Lille. While I might have said a lot of things back then, today, his transfer to PSG looks like a misstep.”
Mixed opinions on Chevalier’s future
Not everyone agrees with Acherchour’s take. Elton Mokolo, another analyst, believes Chevalier should tough it out at PSG. “I’d stay and fight,” Mokolo asserted. “I’d channel my inner Rocky and go all out. Chevalier’s advantage is that his coach will give him a chance—rotations happen. He’s got time to prove himself.”
