Mali football team coach tom saintfiet steps down amid crisis

Tom Saintfiet, the Belgian coach of Mali’s national football team, has announced his immediate departure from the role of head coach. Saintfiet, who took charge in August 2024, cited the country’s escalating political turmoil and security challenges—including intensified attacks by jihadist groups and Tuareg rebels—as key factors in his decision.

In a heartfelt statement shared on his Facebook page on April 27, 2026, Saintfiet reflected on his tenure, which spanned 17 matches. “This marks the end of my mission as head coach of Mali’s senior national team. I leave with pride and dedication, despite the difficult circumstances,” he wrote. His message also conveyed solidarity with the Malian people, emphasizing football’s unifying power during turbulent times. “In these exceptionally challenging circumstances, my deepest sympathies go to the people and nation of Mali. Football is a sport of unity, and I hope it continues to bring peace and hope to the country,” he added.

During Saintfiet’s tenure, Mali navigated a challenging FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, suffering only two defeats in 17 games. Notably, the team reached the quarterfinals of the most recent Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), where they fell 1-0 to Senegal. Despite the setback, Saintfiet expressed optimism for Mali’s football future. “May peace, stability, and hope return to Mali. I wish the team all the best—go Eagles!”

Before his appointment in Mali, Saintfiet was previously linked to the Ghana national team, though the position ultimately went to Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz. The Malian Football Federation (FMF) has since acknowledged Saintfiet’s contributions and launched a search for his successor, with federation president Mahazou dit Baba Cissé praising his work.
