Morocco reaffirms backing for Libya’s political process

Libya, Mohamed Arrouchi, Libyan crisis

Morocco has once again expressed its unwavering commitment to a political resolution in Libya, reaffirming its support during a recent African Union Peace and Security Council session.

The Moroccan ambassador and permanent representative to the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, Mohamed Arrouchi, emphasized the Kingdom’s backing for national reconciliation efforts and inter-Libyan dialogue initiatives. These steps aim to strengthen existing progress and foster consensus among Libyan factions while preserving the country’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Arrouchi highlighted the Skhirat Agreement, signed on December 17, 2015, as a credible framework for a lasting political solution. He stressed the importance of upholding this agreement, which emerged from UN-backed reconciliation talks, to ensure Libya’s stability.

The diplomat also underscored Morocco’s appreciation for the African Union’s sustained efforts in promoting peace and security across the continent, particularly in resolving the Libyan crisis. He commended the AU’s role in facilitating dialogue and stability in Libya, reflecting Morocco’s alignment with continental priorities under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.

Arrouchi noted recent Libyan meetings in Tripoli and Zenten, which culminated in a January 7, 2026 agreement between representatives of the Government of National Unity and the eastern administration. He reiterated Morocco’s long-standing role in bridging divides among Libyan parties, earning their trust in the Kingdom’s mediation efforts.

These initiatives align with international legality, the Skhirat Agreement, and the Bouznika understandings, all aimed at achieving a Libyan-led solution acceptable to all parties while rejecting military options. The Moroccan delegation called for continued political negotiations to resolve the crisis sustainably.
