Morocco releases detained journalist Ali Lmrabet amid ongoing probe

Freedom regained, but legal battle continues

The investigative journalist Ali Lmrabet, known for his critical reporting, was released on July 15 after being held for three days. His arrest at Tanger airport on July 12 sparked widespread concern among press freedom advocates. The prosecutor’s office in Casablanca ordered his release, returning his seized equipment—two computers, an external storage device, and a smartphone—following an initial hearing.

Despite this positive step, authorities confirmed that the investigation remains active. Technical assessments are underway, with further legal measures expected upon completion. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) welcomed the decision but emphasized that the charges—allegedly spreading defamatory digital content—have not been dropped.

Journalist denies wrongdoing, calls arrest politically motivated

Lmrabet, who holds both French and Moroccan citizenship, firmly denied any legal wrongdoing during his interrogation. Speaking to RSF, he stated:

“I am a journalist, not a politician. My work adheres to international standards, and I have never been convicted of defamation, slander, or harming individuals—whether in France, Spain, or Morocco. Practicing independent journalism that challenges state or security structures seems to disturb many, but this is my profession. I live by it, and I only do professional journalism.”

His wife, Laura Feliu, also condemned the arrest, calling it legally unfounded. In her statement, she argued that the charges stem from actions allegedly committed outside Morocco, violating domestic law. She urged authorities to close the case permanently, allowing her husband full freedom of movement.

Press freedom under scrutiny in Morocco

Morocco ranks 105th out of 180 countries in the 2026 RSF World Press Freedom Index, highlighting ongoing concerns about media restrictions. Lmrabet, a prominent figure in critical journalism, has faced repeated legal harassment over the years. His arrest follows a pattern of intimidation against reporters who challenge official narratives.

While today’s release offers temporary relief, the unresolved investigation casts a shadow over press freedom in the country. Advocacy groups continue to monitor the case, urging authorities to uphold legal and ethical standards in journalism.
