Morocco strengthens UN peacekeeping commitments in Rabat talks

Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met with UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix in Rabat, marking Lacroix’s second official visit this year to discuss Morocco’s evolving role in global peacekeeping efforts.

During the meeting, both officials highlighted Morocco’s long-standing strategic commitment to United Nations peacekeeping operations, which dates back to 1960.

Morocco currently ranks ninth among the largest troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping missions worldwide. The Kingdom’s leadership extends beyond troop deployment, as it holds the presidency of the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for 2026 and serves as coordinator for the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on peacekeeping issues—a role that underscores the international trust placed in Morocco’s approach to global peace and security.

Lacroix’s visit coincides with broader UN reform initiatives, including the “UN 80” program, which aims to streamline the organization’s operations, and a comprehensive review of peacekeeping strategies and international peace and security architecture. These reforms seek to restore political primacy in conflict resolution processes.
