Romuald Wadagni officially assumes presidential duties in Bénin.
On Sunday, May 24, 2026, Romuald Wadagni was formally inaugurated as the new President of the Republic of Bénin. The transition of power saw the newly sworn-in head of state accompany his predecessor, Patrice Talon, to his vehicle, marking the official end of Talon’s tenure.
The investiture ceremony, characterized by its understated elegance, unfolded at the distinguished Palais de la République, also known as La Marina. Prior to the public proceedings, outgoing President Patrice Talon and his successor, Romuald Wadagni, engaged in a private discussion, a customary exchange between leaders.
President Wadagni’s oath-taking took place before the Constitutional Court, a pivotal moment witnessed by a significant gathering of Béninese political dignitaries. The event also drew considerable international attention, with representatives from approximately fifteen foreign delegations in attendance, underscoring the regional and global interest in Bénin’s democratic process.
During the solemn ceremony, President Romuald Wadagni took a binding oath, pledging “to respect and defend the Constitution.” He further acknowledged the gravity of his commitment by accepting “to suffer the rigors of the law in case of perjury,” reinforcing his dedication to upholding the rule of law in Bénin.
