Nice faces harsh fifa ruling on closed-door relegation playoff

The OGC Nice finds itself at the center of a major controversy after the French Football Federation (FFF) upheld a ban on spectators for its upcoming Ligue 1 relegation playoff rematch against Saint-Étienne. The decision, confirmed by the FFF’s Superior Appeals Committee, has left the club and its supporters stunned by the severity of the sanction.

The ruling stems from incidents that marred Nice’s final league match of the season against Metz on May 17. Initially handed a three-match ban with two to be played behind closed doors and one suspended, the club’s penalty was escalated to two full matches without fans and a suspended point deduction for the 2026/2027 season.

Club condemns decision as excessive

In a strongly worded statement, Nice expressed disbelief over the ruling, calling it an “aberration” given the club’s history of cooperation with authorities and prior praise from LFP delegates for its handling of the situation. The club emphasized that playing a potentially season-defining match without supporters—already a crushing blow—was compounded by the total exclusion of fans from Allianz Riviera.

The Nice board announced immediate plans to seek conciliation through the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF). Should this avenue fail, legal recourse via the Administrative Tribunal remains an option to challenge the decision.

What’s at stake in the playoff?

The second leg of the Ligue 1 relegation playoff is more than a football match—it represents a pivotal moment for Nice’s future in the top flight. With the outcome hanging in the balance, the absence of a home crowd strips the team of its most passionate support, creating an uneven playing field against Saint-Étienne.

The club’s leadership argues that the sanction disproportionately impacts both team morale and fan engagement, warning that such measures could set a dangerous precedent for other clubs facing disciplinary actions.
