Nice hit with harsh penalties ahead of Saint-Étienne playoff clash

OGC Nice faces tough sanctions before crucial Ligue 1 playoffs against Saint-Étienne

The OGC Nice has been dealt a severe blow ahead of its high-stakes Ligue 1 relegation playoffs against AS Saint-Étienne. On Wednesday, the LFP disciplinary committee handed down tough sanctions following recent pitch invasions and disturbances at Allianz Riviera.

Following last Sunday’s dismal 1-1 draw against Metz—a result that sealed Nice’s fate—the club faced serious consequences after supporters stormed the pitch, launched flares, and caused significant damage. The fallout from that chaotic evening has now directly impacted the club’s playoff prospects.

Harsh penalties threaten Nice’s playoff hopes

The LFP has imposed a two-match stadium ban on Nice, including one suspended game. This means the second leg of the playoffs, scheduled for May 29 at Allianz Riviera, will be played behind closed doors. The first leg in Saint-Étienne on May 26 will also proceed without spectators.

The sanctions add another layer of difficulty for the Côte d’Azur side. Compounding their challenges, the FIFA has denied Nice’s request for a special exemption, meaning several of their key international players may be unavailable for these decisive matches.

With the playoffs looming and multiple obstacles in their path, Nice faces an uphill battle to secure their Ligue 1 survival. The club now must navigate these sanctions while relying on a depleted squad, all under the intense pressure of a must-win scenario.
