Ligue 1: nice faces stadium ban after metz incidents

The disciplinary committee has imposed a two-match full stadium closure and a suspended match at Allianz Riviera on OGC Nice, following the disturbances during their recent encounter with Metz on Sunday. As a result, OGC Nice is expected to play their critical promotion/relegation play-off return leg against Saint-Étienne on May 29 in an empty venue, although the club has already announced its intention to appeal the decision.

The LFP’s Disciplinary Commission delivered a stern verdict against OGC Nice, sanctioning the club with two home matches to be played entirely behind closed doors, along with an additional suspended match at their Allianz Riviera stadium. This severe penalty was issued in response to the events that transpired during the 34th and final Ligue 1 matchday fixture against Metz, specifically citing “the use and throwing of pyrotechnic devices, pitch invasion, and various damages observed at the final whistle.”

This ruling carries immediate consequences, most notably affecting the crucial return leg of the play-off tie against AS Saint-Étienne, scheduled for May 29. Furthermore, the club’s inaugural home game of the subsequent season will also be subject to the ban. However, the Riviera-based club has promptly declared its decision to appeal this judgment, aiming to secure the presence of its supporters for the pivotal clash against AS Saint-Étienne. It is worth noting that for the first leg, hosted at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on May 26, Nice will already be without the services of Elye Wahi due to a suspension.

In parallel, Paris Saint-Germain also received a sanction: the closure of the Tribune Auteuil at Parc des Princes. This penalty was imposed for “the use of pyrotechnic devices and documented visual displays.” This specific measure will be enforced during the capital club’s first home Ligue 1 fixture of the 2026-2027 campaign.

Meanwhile, the case involving FC Nantes, stemming from the pitch invasion at Stade de la Beaujoire early in their match against Toulouse, is still pending and will be adjudicated at a later date.

Other Player Suspensions

Several players have been handed a one-match suspension, either for accumulating a fifth yellow card or due to the revocation of a previous suspended sentence:

  • Benjamin Andre (Lille)
  • Mahdi Camara (Stade Rennais FC)
  • Christian Mawissa (AS Monaco)
  • Elye Wahi (OGC Nice)
