Thousands of Nigeriens took to the streets of Niamey on Saturday to commemorate the third anniversary of the CNSP’s takeover of power.

“On this memorable date, Niger and its people have decided to turn the page of history by offering their spontaneous support to the CNSP’s action, which has brought an end to thirteen years of governance that have put national unity at risk through various forms of repression and a system of enslavement under imperialist dictatorial rule,” said Boubacar Kimba Kollo, a Nigerian civil society actor.
For protesters, the rally is also an opportunity to celebrate the achievements recorded since the advent of this new political dynamic in which Niger has engaged itself.
“The 26th of July represents for us a date of liberation, a date of hope, and a date that marks the milestones of a new form of governance different from the one we have known during the three decades that passed,” said Abdoulaye Salifou, a protester.
“Our country has recorded significant progress, especially in terms of fighting against Western imperialism and affirming its sovereignty. We encourage the current authorities to keep their course,” added Moussa Moumouni, also a protester.

Beyond the celebration, attention is now focused on the challenges ahead, with the hope of seeing reforms continue and the ambitions of the Refoundation materialize further.
