Thousands of Nigeriens took to the streets of Niamey this Saturday morning to mark the third anniversary of the Refondation du Niger, honoring the CNSP’s rise to power on July 26, 2023.
The demonstration reflected a wave of popular enthusiasm, with citizens celebrating what they see as a pivotal moment in the nation’s history. Supporters framed the event as a decisive break from thirteen years of governance they describe as divisive, repressive, and subservient to foreign interests.
“This date symbolizes liberation, hope, and the beginning of a new era of governance, distinct from the decades of mismanagement that preceded it,” shared Boubacar Kimba Kollo, a prominent figure in Niger’s civil society.
“For us, the 26th of July is a day of freedom and renewal. It represents the path toward reclaiming our sovereignty and strengthening our national unity,” explained Abdoulaye Salifou, a protester in the crowd.
Participants also highlighted key achievements under the current leadership, particularly in challenging Western influence and asserting Niger’s independence on the global stage.
“Our country has made significant strides in resisting imperial domination and asserting its rightful place in Africa. We urge the authorities to remain steadfast in their commitment to these reforms,” noted Moussa Moumouni, another attendee.
The gathering served not only as a celebration but also as a reminder of the challenges ahead. Many expressed optimism that ongoing reforms will continue to shape the future of the Refondation du Niger, ensuring lasting progress for the nation.
