Niger drug bust exposes West African cocaine smuggling route

A high-profile operation in Zinder has uncovered a daring attempt to smuggle 920 grams of cocaine hidden within shipments of second-hand clothing. The operation, conducted on June 5, 2026, led to the arrest of two suspects—a Nigerien resident and a Beninese national—in the Djaguindi district of the regional capital.

The breakthrough came after an anonymous tip alerted regional narcotics enforcement officers to suspicious activity involving used clothing consignments, commonly known locally as ‘Bocho’. Upon inspection, investigators discovered the illicit cargo concealed within tightly packed bales of garments en route from Lomé to Nigeria, transiting through Niamey.
