Niger enhances healthcare access with new health centers in Maradi

In Niger, the Maradi region is experiencing a significant boost in its healthcare infrastructure under the PIDUREM initiative. The inauguration of three new Type II Health Centers (CSI) in Maradi and Tessaoua marks a pivotal moment in expanding access to primary healthcare for urban and peri-urban communities.

The recent completion of these centers—part of the Integrated Urban Development and Multisectoral Resilience Project (PIDUREM)—represents a major leap forward in reducing the strain on regional hospitals while bringing advanced medical services closer to residents. The new facilities in Maradi’s ADS neighborhood (3rd arrondissement) and Tessaoua’s Toudou district are now fully operational, equipped with cutting-edge medical technology to support diagnostic and treatment needs.

A collaborative effort for sustainable healthcare delivery

The rollout of these centers has been closely monitored by regional authorities, including the Regional Directorate of Public Health, the General Secretary of the Maradi Region, and the Delegated Administrator of Tessaoua. Their involvement ensures that the facilities meet the highest standards of care. A representative from the Regional Health Directorate emphasized the project’s success: “Bringing healthcare directly to neighborhoods is no longer just a goal—it’s now a tangible reality.”

The initiative also includes a comprehensive equipment handover, featuring advanced medical tools tailored for Type II centers. At Tessaoua’s Tsamia Koura site, a third center is nearing completion, with equipment installation scheduled immediately after construction concludes. This phased approach guarantees seamless integration of infrastructure and technology, avoiding the pitfalls of delayed or incomplete service rollouts.

PIDUREM: A blueprint for Nigeria’s healthcare transformation

For Niger, which is racing to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in healthcare, the PIDUREM model stands as a benchmark. By combining infrastructure development with simultaneous equipment delivery, the project ensures that facilities are not left underutilized—a common criticism in development initiatives. In Maradi, the initiative is breathing new life into community health, making medical care more accessible than ever before.

As these centers begin serving patients, they not only alleviate pressure on regional hospitals but also empower residents with reliable, high-quality healthcare close to home.
