Olympique Lyonnais’ request to postpone Toulouse match rejected by LFP

Olympique Lyonnais will kick off their Ligue 1 season in Toulouse on August 22. The club had formally asked the LFP to reschedule this game, which was planned just days after a potential Champions League playoff. However, the LFP has turned down this request for an adjustment.

Early skirmishes between the Ligue de Football Professionnel and Olympique Lyonnais have emerged even before the season’s official start. Set to face Toulouse FC on August 22 for the inaugural Ligue 1 matchday, Lyon’s leadership approached the professional football league to request a postponement of the fixture. The primary justification for this appeal was the potential scheduling conflict: the match could fall between the two legs of a crucial Champions League playoff, should OL successfully navigate the preceding round.

This presented a legitimate concern for the Lyon board, which then formally submitted its request to the LFP via written correspondence.

To strengthen their argument, Olympique Lyonnais invoked the “PSG precedent,” highlighting the broader interests of French football. Paris Saint-Germain had previously benefited from several match postponements last season, enabling them to prepare optimally for their European commitments.

Consequently, and appealing to principles of fairness, the seven-time French champions confidently anticipated a favorable response from the league body.

Against expectations, the Administrative Council of the Ligue de Football Professionnel ultimately rejected this possibility. The governing body firmly expressed its unwillingness to disrupt the Ligue 1 television broadcast schedule right from the inaugural matchday.

This decision marks an initial calendar challenge for Paulo Fonseca‘s squad. The Gones are now set to face an arduous battle throughout late August as they strive to secure a coveted spot in the Champions League.
