Senegal’s new National Assembly President set for Yaoundé APF session
Following his recent election as President of Senegal’s National Assembly, after his tenure as Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko is confirmed to attend the 51st annual session of the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie (APF) in Cameroon. His presence in Yaoundé from July 7 to 12, 2026, marks a significant moment for the prominent West African political figure.
This upcoming trip represents a crucial diplomatic debut for the former Senegalese premier. His participation is expected to draw considerable attention from his parliamentary peers, signaling Senegal’s renewed high-level engagement within the APF. The nation holds a pivotal role within this inter-parliamentary body. Sonko’s initial foray onto the international stage in his new capacity is anticipated to be a major political highlight of the summit, closely observed by the press and delegations from across the Francophone world.
Yaoundé, the political capital of Cameroon, is meticulously preparing to host this international gathering. Under the stewardship of Hilarion Etong, Vice-President of the Cameroonian National Assembly and head of the local organizing committee, a comprehensive program is planned. It promises a blend of high-level diplomatic discussions and robust youth involvement.
The main event will be held concurrently with the 11th Francophone Youth Parliament (PFJ), which is scheduled to commence on July 6. By hosting both the senior parliamentary session and the Youth Parliament simultaneously, Cameroon and the APF are sending a powerful message about the critical importance of integrating younger generations into governance and democratic discourse. For an entire week, young delegates from various continents will engage in simulated parliamentary debates within Yaoundé’s legislative chamber, running parallel to the plenary sessions of the seasoned parliamentarians. This Yaoundé session is poised to become a historic landmark for the Francophone community, navigating the evolving political landscape of West Africa, as personified by Sonko, and addressing the future challenges championed by its youth.
