The atmosphere in Paris turned volatile on Saturday evening as crowds gathered to watch the Champions League final between PSG and Arsenal. Tensions escalated rapidly, particularly around the Parc des Princes and the iconic Champs-Élysées, where law enforcement swiftly intervened to maintain order.
Early unrest and targeted arrests
By late afternoon, the first arrests were being made near the Porte de Saint-Cloud and along the bustling Champs-Élysées. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, who was overseeing security arrangements, confirmed that a series of coordinated police actions had already begun in response to isolated but concerning incidents.
The situation intensified as the match progressed, with authorities reporting multiple deployments of tear gas to disperse unruly groups. These measures were deemed necessary following reports of projectiles being thrown at officers in the vicinity of the Champs-Élysées, where thousands had congregated to celebrate—or protest—the outcome of the game.
Security measures and crowd control challenges
Officials had sealed off the upper section of the Champs-Élysées, but frustrations among some PSG supporters led to spontaneous gatherings in the lower part of the avenue. The preemptive closure failed to prevent sporadic clashes, including the smashing of a bus shelter and the use of makeshift weapons by a small faction of troublemakers.
In the XVIth arrondissement, reports emerged of mortar-like explosions, while in the XVIIIth, masked individuals carrying iron bars were observed moving through the streets—though no immediate acts of violence were confirmed at that time.
Key figures and consequences
By 7:30 PM, authorities had conducted 1,579 identity checks, resulting in 64 fines. A total of 20 people were detained, with 10 placed in custody. Among the items confiscated were 24 torches and two mortar-like devices, while one bus shelter on avenue de la Boétie sustained significant damage.
Near the Parc des Princes, an estimated 150 individuals attempted to force their way into the stadium but were quickly repelled by police. The swift response ensured that the disruption was short-lived, and order was restored within minutes.
The evening’s events underscored the challenges of managing large-scale public gatherings, especially during high-stakes sporting events where emotions run high.
