President romuald wadagni welcomes malian foreign minister to Cotonou

During the official ceremonies marking his inauguration, Bénin’s newly sworn-in President, Romuald Wadagni, held a formal meeting with Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdoulaye Diop.

The Malian foreign minister delivered a personal message of congratulations and solidarity from the Transitional President of Mali, Army General Assimi Goïta.

A strong signal for enhanced bilateral cooperation

This cordial meeting provided an opportunity for both dignitaries to assess the current state of relations between Porto-Novo and Bamako. Beyond the customary felicitations, the discussions laid the groundwork for a renewed dynamic between Bénin and Mali, especially within the evolving regional landscape.

The core of the discussions centered on revitalizing the historical cooperation frameworks that unite these two West African nations.

Mutual respect and national sovereignty at the core

President Wadagni and Minister Diop emphatically reaffirmed their respective states’ commitment to solidifying bilateral ties. This shared roadmap is now built upon three fundamental pillars:

  • Mutual respect for each nation’s strategic choices;
  • The preservation of national sovereignty;
  • Consideration for the shared interests of the Béninese and Malian populations.

“This audience reflects the convergence of views between our two heads of state on the imperative to forge a pragmatic and mutually beneficial partnership,” stated a representative from the Malian delegation.

As West Africa confronts significant security and economic challenges, this diplomatic outreach between Cotonou and Bamako underscores a collective commitment to prioritizing direct dialogue and inter-state solidarity for the prosperity of the sub-region’s inhabitants.
