The Confederation of African Football (CAF) made a controversial decision three weeks ago, revoking Senegal’s hosting rights for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN). This followed chaotic scenes late in the final match in Rabat on January 18, which ultimately led to Morocco being awarded the tournament. Naturally, Senegal’s national team, the Lions of Teranga, has strongly contested this ruling.
On Monday, the Senegalese Football Federation received the official notification and detailed reasoning behind the decision to strip them of the hosting rights. This step is crucial before they can formally challenge the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), as reported by RMC’s digital platforms.
cas delivers final verdict swiftly
The CAF President has already indicated that the final decision will rest with the CAS. While the tribunal has not disclosed a timeline, a ruling is expected within weeks. This is definitive, as neither Senegal nor Morocco will have the option to appeal once the verdict is issued.
«The CAS is fully equipped to resolve disputes of this nature, leveraging specialized and independent arbitrators», stated Me Matthieu Reeb, the CAS Secretary General, in a recent interview. «We recognize that teams and fans are eager for a swift resolution, and we are committed to expediting the arbitration process while ensuring all parties receive a fair hearing.»
