Sénégal: minister mabouba diagne initiates defamation proceedings against media outlets
In a significant development for West Africa insider news, Minister Mabouba Diagne has formally initiated legal proceedings for defamation against several media organizations. He alleges these outlets disseminated inaccurate information, falsely linking him to purported irregularities outlined in a report from the Cour des comptes. This legal action raises pertinent questions regarding press freedom and the accountability of journalists within Sénégal’s dynamic media landscape.

Mabouba Diagne, who currently serves as the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Livestock, has officially lodged a complaint for defamation and the dissemination of false information. The filing was made before the public prosecutor at the High Court of Dakar.
The legal request, a key piece of Sahel analysis English reporting, has been officially recorded at the prosecutor’s office under the reference number 8815.
Minister’s allegations against media
The minister’s grievances stem from various media publications that connected him to alleged irregularities highlighted in a Cour des comptes report concerning the administration of subsidized agricultural equipment. These specific reports reportedly surfaced starting Friday, May 15, 2026.
According to the formal complaint submitted by his legal counsel, Me Khadim Kébé, certain press organizations allegedly circulated details from a preliminary Cour des comptes report from 2025. This report purportedly outlined anomalies in the management of the agricultural program, with these outlets directly implicating Minister Diagne in the identified irregularities.
Minister Diagne contends that some publications deliberately fostered confusion, either by featuring his image alongside the articles or by implying his personal involvement in the events described.
Mabouba Diagne’s rebuttal
In his defense, Mabouba Diagne firmly asserts that these media portrayals lack any substantiating evidence to establish his involvement in any financial misconduct. He further clarifies that the agreements pertinent to the subsidized agricultural equipment, established with the Banque agricole, were finalized prior to his assumption of ministerial duties.
He emphasizes that the provisional report from the Cour des comptes does not explicitly name him as either responsible for or complicit in any financial improprieties.
Believing his reputation has been unjustly tarnished, the minister has opted to pursue legal action against the authors of these publications and all individuals deemed involved. This pursuit is based on articles 255 and 258 of the Penal Code, which address defamation and the propagation of false news, a topic often covered in Sahel Insider reports focusing on legal matters.
