Senegal opposition unites after Sonko’s parliamentary reinstatement

Opposition coalition demands united front against ruling party

The Front pour la Défense de la Démocratie et de la République (FDR) has sharply criticized the Constitutional Council’s latest ruling, which reinstated Ousmane Sonko as a member of Senegal’s National Assembly. In a strongly worded statement, the opposition alliance argued that the decision fails to resolve ongoing political tensions surrounding Sonko’s return to parliament.

The FDR emphasized that while the Council deemed itself unable to rule on the grounds of forfeiture cited by challengers, this does not invalidate the broader criticisms leveled against Sonko’s reinstatement. The coalition accused the government of fostering a climate of incompetence and arrogance, while also questioning statements made by the leader of the Pastef party in recent international media appearances, calling them a distorted view of national identity.

Political tensions escalate amid institutional dispute

In its communiqué, the FDR described Senegal as facing a worrying political moment, warning of what it described as the ruling party’s institutional drift. The coalition reaffirmed its commitment to operating within the framework of the republic and the rule of law, despite its sharp opposition to the current administration.

Beyond the immediate issue of Sonko’s parliamentary seat, the FDR issued a broader appeal for opposition forces to unite. The alliance urged political parties, civil society groups, trade unions, youth movements, and pro-democracy advocates to join forces in forming a unified front capable of offering an alternative to the current government. This call comes on the heels of the Constitutional Council’s rejection of opposition legal challenges to Sonko’s reinstatement, effectively ending the legal battle over his parliamentary mandate.
