The handover ceremony at the Prime Minister’s office provided a poignant moment of transition between outgoing Premier Ousmane Sonko and his successor, Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô, who was officially sworn in to lead the government.
The event was not merely a formal transfer of duties but a symbolic bridge between two leaders who had previously worked side by side in steering national policy. The ceremony was marked by mutual expressions of respect and reflections on their shared journey in managing state affairs.
From collaboration to transition: Al Aminou Lô’s tribute to Sonko
In his remarks, the newly appointed Prime Minister recalled the origins of their professional relationship. “In April 2024, he reached out to me. He didn’t know me, but I answered the call. He placed his trust in me,” he stated, referring to the early days of their collaboration under the National Transformation Agenda.
He went on to detail how that trust evolved into a deeper role within the executive branch: “They made a decision, and the President of the Republic called me to serve alongside him in implementing the National Transformation Agenda. The results speak for themselves.” Al Aminou Lô emphasized the importance of the bridge he was asked to maintain between the Prime Minister’s office and the Presidency.
“As he prepared to leave office, Sonko encouraged me to remain the link between the Prime Minister’s office and the Presidency concerning the National Transformation Agenda. That’s exactly what I did,” he explained.
A partnership rooted in trust and guidance
The transition was underscored not only by institutional continuity but also by personal warmth. The new Prime Minister recounted how Sonko consistently made himself available for consultations: “Whenever I needed to report progress or seek advice, he welcomed me with openness and generosity.”
He described the handover as a moment steeped in both duty and humanity: “It is an honor to take this step with someone who has always sought the best for this State of Senegal and supported me with remarkable generosity.”
In a candid moment, Al Aminou Lô shared a sobering message from Sonko: “He already gave me a heads-up, just this past Tuesday, telling me quite frankly that the road ahead will be extremely challenging.” Despite the difficulties anticipated, the new leader expressed his intention to continue seeking Sonko’s counsel, affirming, “I will keep benefiting from his wise guidance whenever necessary.”
Legacy and expectations in Senegal’s governance
The handover ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the delicate balance between continuity and change in national leadership. While the new Prime Minister inherits a demanding agenda, the tone set during the transition suggests a commitment to preserving the momentum of past initiatives while navigating future challenges with the wisdom of experience.
