Senegal’s 2027 local elections: Sonko warns Faye against postponement

During his inaugural rally at the Dakar Arena on Sunday, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the PASTEF party, addressed the upcoming 2027 local elections, delivering a firm message about the possibility of a postponed vote.

Standing before a packed audience of party members and key figures, Sonko made it clear that PASTEF would not support any initiative to delay the elections. « PASTEF will not endorse any plan to postpone the local elections. We are ready to proceed as scheduled. » His declaration was met with strong applause from the crowd.

He went on to emphasize that any decision to postpone the elections must align with the legal framework established by Senegal’s institutions. « A postponement can only occur in Senegal through a parliamentary process led by the National Assembly. » Sonko urged officials to take the necessary steps to ensure the election proceeds without delay.

Addressing concerns about the election timeline, Sonko added, « Let the president sign the decree—slowing down the process won’t help. » His remarks underscored the urgency of moving forward with the preparations.
