Senegal’s political and economic challenges highlighted by Amadou Ba

In a significant meeting at the Palais de la République, former Prime Minister Amadou Ba emphasized the urgent need for political dialogue and financial credibility to strengthen Senegal during a session of the National Dialogue with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

Describing the initiative as crucial for the nation, the former head of government underscored the importance of inclusive discussions on key national priorities. As one of several former leaders consulted by the President, Amadou Ba shared his insights on political reforms, institutional changes, and the economic and security challenges facing Senegal today.

Economic pressures and financial credibility

The former Finance Minister expressed deep concerns over Senegal’s current economic climate, particularly the impact of global financial pressures on the country. He highlighted that economic difficulties are already weighing heavily on citizens and stressed the need for urgent action to restore confidence among international partners.

He recalled that during his tenure as Finance Minister, Senegal went six years without receiving any financial support from the International Monetary Fund, despite maintaining its credibility on the global stage. However, he acknowledged that the current economic environment demands renewed compromises to secure essential financing and investment for the country’s future.

Amadou Ba also warned about the consequences of repeated downgrades in Senegal’s financial ratings, which he argued are increasing borrowing costs and limiting the government’s fiscal flexibility.

Call for extended dialogue and political unity

During the discussions, Amadou Ba advocated for an extension of the National Dialogue by an additional 10 to 15 days to foster stronger consensus, particularly on electoral reforms. He made this suggestion not as a representative of the opposition, but in the broader national interest.

He reiterated his commitment to constructive engagement, stating, “The country needs consensus, the country needs dialogue.” While acknowledging his role in the opposition, he stressed the importance of addressing national issues with a spirit of cooperation and calm.

Security and regional stability

The talks also covered Senegal’s security challenges, especially against the backdrop of shifting dynamics in the subregion. Amadou Ba called for a comprehensive dialogue on these issues and emphasized the need to bolster the country’s defense and security forces to address emerging threats effectively.

As the meeting concluded, he reaffirmed his political stance but urged all stakeholders to prioritize national interests above partisan divisions, concluding with a message of unity and purpose.
