Sylvia Bongo Ondimba, the spouse of former Gabonese President Ali Bongo, is currently under suspicion in a Swiss financial investigation. She is alleged to have transferred millions of euros to a bank in Geneva, with these funds reportedly stemming from the embezzlement of public assets.
Geneva’s judicial authorities are actively investigating the former Gabonese First Lady. Since 2023, Swiss justice officials have been examining a case of alleged money laundering involving Sylvia Bongo Ondimba, the wife of former Gabonese President Ali Bongo.
An ongoing inquiry into money laundering has been confirmed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Geneva.
As part of this legal procedure, Swiss authorities had sought cooperation from Gabon. While Libreville did not respond to this request for mutual legal assistance, the Gabonese state subsequently constituted itself as a civil plaintiff before the Genevan courts. Sylvia Bongo contested this move, but the Criminal Appeals Chamber of Geneva validated Gabon’s right to participate in the proceedings in late May.
This Swiss investigation comes at a time when Sylvia Bongo has already been sentenced in absentia to 20 years in prison in Gabon for charges related to the embezzlement of public funds.
