Meanwhile, Sevilla appear to have put last season’s 13th-place finish, just one point above relegation, behind them. The Andalusians sit fourth with 13 points, thanks to narrow wins under Luis García Plaza, such as against Valencia and at Deportivo La Coruña (0-1). Their only defeat came at home to Atlético Madrid (1-3).

After finishing 13th last season and flirting with relegation for much of the campaign, Sevilla have transformed their fortunes. Under Luis García Plaza, the Andalusians have already notched four wins in six matches, often by the narrowest of margins, as seen in their last two outings against Valencia and Deportivo La Coruña (1-0 each). The standout result so far is the 3-1 triumph at San Mamés against Athletic Bilbao, and only Atlético Madrid have left the Sánchez-Pizjuán with a win (1-3). With 13 points, they sit fourth and have scored in every game, powered by a collective effort where goals come from all areas.
This revival is also down to a busy transfer window. Youssouf Fofana, formerly of AC Milan, brings experience to midfield, where Jon Guridi and Giorgi Kochorashvili have also arrived. At the back, Juan Iglesias quickly made the right-back spot his own, even scoring the winner against Valencia. Up front, ex-Saint-Étienne striker Lucas Stassin and Félix Correia, on loan from Lille, add pace and depth. The squad has lost several key figures, though: César Azpilicueta retired, and goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, Nemanja Gudelj, Juanlu and Akor Adams all departed, as did Neal Maupay, who returned to Marseille. The routs have come thick and fast, from Elche to Mestalla (0-5 each time), culminating in Wednesday’s 7-2 demolition of Racing Santander. The only minor blemish was the 4-2 win at Levante, marred by two defensive errors late on. With 28 goals scored, Hansi Flick boasts by far the best attack in Spain, even without fielding a true centre-forward. Positioned up front, Raphinha epitomises this: after his hat-trick against Racing, the captain has already found the net nine times and leads Lamine Yamal, who has seven goals, in the scoring charts.
The summer was eventful in Catalonia, though. Deprived of Robert Lewandowski, who left for MLS, Deco splashed over €170 million. Anthony Gordon immediately made his mark on the left wing with four assists, while Karim Adeyemi and Gabriel Jesus broaden the attacking options. The arrival of Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, adds another dimension to midfield, and João Cancelo, now signed permanently, also scored on Wednesday. Several familiar faces have left: Ferran Torres, Ronald Araújo, Marc-André ter Stegen, and Marcus Rashford, who returned to Manchester United after his loan.
