Sonko warns new prime minister amid political tensions in Senegal

Amid escalating political unrest in Senegal, opposition leader Ousmane Sonko delivered a pointed warning to the newly appointed Prime Minister Al Aminou Lo. Criticizing recent statements from Lo, Sonko urged restraint and adherence to technical governance, hinting at undisclosed insights into their strained relationship.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Sonko made no effort to conceal his frustration with remarks made by his successor, issuing subtle yet firm warnings that underscored growing political friction.

Addressing the Prime Minister directly, Sonko advised him to confine his actions to his stated role as a technocrat. « He should stick to the numbers. If he claims to be a technocrat, he must limit himself to technocratic duties, » Sonko asserted.

Political tensions take center stage

Sonko went further, accusing Lo of contributing to the escalating tensions between the ruling Pastef party and the President. « We are fully aware of the role he played in the disputes between Pastef and the President. Until now, we have chosen not to disclose all the details. He should calm down, » Sonko warned.

He also criticized Lo’s conduct during the announcement of the new government lineup. « Yesterday, during the unveiling of the cabinet, I heard him lecture others. Perhaps he should start by applying those lessons to himself, » Sonko remarked with a sharp tone.

Concluding his remarks, Sonko hinted at possessing critical information that remains undisclosed. « We know everything. While we have opted to withhold certain facts, we will not tolerate further provocation, » he stated firmly.
